THE LOCATION
Looking at Holland Green Park with its greenery and ancient buildings and the recently refurbished London Design Museum with its unique architecture, it is easy to imagine the history.
Allies and Morrison took on the challenge, constructing 3 luxurious 6-8-story buildings, out of which our client chose an entire penthouse floor, offering serene views over the London skyline.
THE SPACE
Comprising of 3 penthouse units, our task was to consolidate all three into one unit, thus re-planning the entire floor, converting it into one apartment. Barring structural walls, elevator shaft, and balcony locations already set, the entire floor was open to reconstruction.
A master bedroom suite with 2 bathrooms and 2 wardrobes plus 5 en-suite bedrooms, was a minimum. Additionally 2x living/entertainment areas, 2 dining spaces, 2 guest WCs had to be accommodated.
The client wishes for high ceilings had to be achieved without compromising on AC capacity, and providing space for lighting installations. This apartment is the only one in Holland Green, whose ceilings are above thewindow-lever, an achievement itself the client appreciated.
Lighting and the very demanding AV/ home automation system with its’ cable requirement set another challenqe for the team. The AV room required more space from the kitchen and the cabling necessitated dropping ceiling height in the main entrance Lobby, to highlight an example of the creativity deployed.
The fixed lighting needed to be soft on the eye and ensure different moods could be achieved easily, with a high daylight light factor. Ceiling edge strip lights were specified from Viabizzuno to provide that extra sharp edge effect, with a dotless consistency complementing the custom made chandalier installations from Lasvit and Reflex.
On the client’s request, planning applications to enclose the 2 terraces as winter gardens were prepared and submitted. Unfortunately, it was turned down in the end.
DESIGN AND CONCEPT
Elegance and sophistication.
Using luxurious labels in the background accentuate gender-neutral designs, making it a ‘showpiece’ home for the client. Attention to details paramount, prioritizing how materials join. Careful consideration of different combinations, focusing on natural compositions, and accentuated elegant settled patterns.
Pale and pastel color fabric colors, contrasting with reflecting metals, glass, and mirrors. Taking risks with unconventional installations, yet keeping it confident and comfortable for the owners and complimenting their lifestyles.
A special request by the lady of the house was the Master Room Suite; use more feminine shapes and pastel pink shades. All cladding and curtain fabrics composed of silk and contradicting with matte and shine. Using none synthetic silk-wool velvet for bed and couches, and placing accent furniture made out of hand-blown glass pieces and burl wood Joinery throughout the apartment
These features can be recognized all through the penthouse, complimented by the calm ivory and light beige wall cladding from burl wood and Armani fabrics. The atmosphere accentuated with colorful artwork and floral arrangements.
Bold carpet patterns detailed were created to complement the white Colorado white marble blocks, which were selected by IDC in Italy, individually. Very consistent in color, beautifully bookmarked and almost vane-less, this marble was used throughout the apartment with the exception to the bedrooms. Every corner has something unique and special to offer.
Because of the client’s trust and budget, we were able to fully expand our creativity to satisfy the brief. An opportunity for us as designers to showcase what can be achieved utilizing the most sought after materials and designs at the time.
